  4.     Jazz musician Billy Tipton never gave his Social Security
  5. number to his booking agent. He never went swimming with his three
  6. adopted sons. Though he became seriously ill, he never visited a
  7. doctor. Last week, four days after Tipton, 74, died from a bleeding
  8. ulcer in Spokane, a funeral director told one of the musician's
  9. sons the reason for his odd behavior: Tipton was a woman.

  11.     A gifted pianist and saxophonist, Tipton apparently began his
  12. sexual masquerade during the Big Band era of the 1930s, when women
  13. sang but were seldom allowed to play instruments. "He gave up
  14. everything," said Kitty Oakes, the woman Tipton claimed was his
  15. wife for 19 years. "There were certain rules and regulations in
  16. those days if you were going to be a musician." Musicians who
  17. played with Tipton would remark on his youthful appearance, but
  18. never suspected his ruse. "Mentally he was a father," said one son,
  19. Scott Miller. "He was always there for us."
